Position Title: Junior Counsellor
Location: Camp Bonaventure Red Deer - 4510 41st Avenue, Red Deer AB
Duration: June 13 - August 25, 2024
Mandatory Training Dates: June 13 - 27, 2024 (Camp Wide Training), July 20, 2024 (Mid Summer Training/Team Building) 
Salary or Salary Range: $15.50 - $16.50/Hour
Number of Positions Open: 8 positions

Who are we? 
As an agency, we focus on bringing inclusive and accessible recreation programming to the people who mean the most to us, our members! We work to break down barriers and adapt to individual and communal needs. Between Friends runs age appropriate, high quality programs and services in our community for both adult and youth participants. One of our most popular programs is Camp Bonaventure, which is a fun, outdoor, pan-ability summer day camp for youth ages 7-17. Activities at Camp Bonaventure include swimming, games, crafts, yoga, music therapy, and much much more! 

What will you be doing as a Junior Counsellor?
As a Junior Counsellor for Camp Bonaventure you will be responsible, along with up to 4 other Junior Counsellors, for the direct supervision of up to 20 campers. You will be placed in programming groups based on camper needs, you will work with different groups throughout the summer at a 1:4 ratio. As a team you are responsible for planning and implementation of inclusive, engaging, and fun programming. Junior Counsellors are responsible for ensuring campers needs are met and have a fun and fulfilling camp experience. This position directly reports to the Senior Counsellor for the respective age group. 
Responsible for the direct care and supervision of campers within a ratio of 1:4
Effectively plan and implement program activities, and ensure they are planned with the highest standard of quality and safety; this will include but is not limited to; age appropriate, variety of activities, adaptable to different abilities,
Providing the highest standard of personal care and support to campers
Effectively support campers with additional behavioral needs
Professionally and consistently communicate with parents/guardians, support workers, and family members. 
Follow up with the appropriate supervisors in the event of any emergency situations

Time Requirements/When do I work? 
Training will be held from June 14 - June 30th, with your first day with Campers beginning on July 1st. Training days are 8:30 - 4:30 PM unless otherwise noted on the training schedule
  • July - August - work in person from Camp Bonaventure  (Monday - Friday, estimated 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM 
Occasional evening and/or weekends may required for training and meetings
  • Saturday, August 24 - primarily focused on end of summer wrap up administrative duties as set by the Team Lead
  • Mandatory Mid Summer Training and encouraged Team Building - July 20, 2024
  • Once a week staff meetings, from 4:30 - 5:30 PM
  • Daily Safety Briefing at 8:30 AM

Fun - You look for ways to incorporate excitement and joy into day-to-day experiences. Must be able to participate in the following activities: swimming, canoeing, sailing, arts and crafts, etc. Previous experience working at camps, considered an asset.

Intentional - Your actions are purposeful and value driven. You are a direct and clear communicator. Ability to respond appropriately in high stress situations. Previous experience working with youth, considered an asset and transfers, and personal care support. 

Easeful - You strive to create accessible and inclusive spaces that remove barriers to access. Previous experience developing and implementing programming, considered an asset. 

Safe - You value creating and maintaining safe spaces to promote inclusion and fun! 

Requirements:
Must be over the age of 16. 
Must pass a Screening Process including a Backcheck search and an Intervention Record Check completed by Alberta Human Services. 
Must be able to provide proof of current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, prior to the start date.
Experience working with people with disabilities and/or youth would be considered an asset.
Ability to provide support to participants requiring lifts and transfers, and personal care support

Compensation
