Position Title: Relief Counsellor (Previously Floating Leader)

Location: Camp Bonaventure - Sandy Beach, 1215 50th Ave SW or Cambrian Heights Community Association, 600 Northmount Drive NW

Duration: June 13 - August 25, 2024

Mandatory Training Dates: June 13 - 27, 2024 (Camp Wide Training), July 20, 2024 (Mid Summer Training/Team Building)

Salary or Salary Range: $16.50 - $17.50/Hour

Number of Positions Open: 8 positions

Who are we?

As an agency, we focus on bringing inclusive and accessible recreation programming to the people who mean the most to us, our members! We work to break down barriers and adapt to individual and communal needs. Between Friends runs age appropriate, high quality programs and services in our community for both adult and youth participants. One of our most popular programs is Camp Bonaventure, which is a fun, outdoor, pan-ability summer day camp for youth ages 4-17. Activities at Camp Bonaventure include swimming, sailing, canoeing, games, crafts, yoga, gardening, and much much more!

What will you be doing as a Relief Counsellor?

As a Relief Counsellor for Between Friends, you will be expected to float into any of our summer programs. This includes: Camp Bonaventure, I.C.A.N!, W.E.S.O.A.R!, and Adventurers. You will be stationed at Camp Bonaventure, but will not always work at Camp. W.E.S.O.A.R!, and Adventurers will typically take place in the evenings and on weekends. You will be placed in a group, or with an individual, based on the need and support required. You will support groups of all ages, functioning either as Senior or Junior Counsellor while at Camp Bonaventure. You are responsible for implementing safe, engaging, and inclusive programming to ensure a fun camp experience for all. This position directly reports to the Camp Supervisor, Membership.

Ability to act as a Senior or Junior Counsellor, in the event of support, coverage, staff absences, etc.
Provide ongoing support and feedback to Senior and Junior Counsellors with which you are placed
Responsible for the direct personal care and supervision of up to 20 campers within a ratio of 1:4
Ensuring all program activities are planned with the highest standard of quality and safety; this will include but is not limited to; age appropriate, variety of activities, adaptable to different abilities
Administering any medications to participants at program; training will be provided
Effectively support campers with additional behavioural needs
Follow up with the appropriate supervisors in the event of any emergency situations

Time Requirements/When do I work?

Training will be held from June 13 - June 27th, with your first day with Campers beginning on July 1st. Training days are 8:30 - 4:30 PM unless otherwise noted on the training schedule
July - August - work in person from Camp Bonaventure
Monday - Friday, estimated 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Occasional evening and/or weekends may required for training and meetings
Saturday, August 24 - primarily focused on end of summer wrap up administrative duties as set by the Program Coordinator
Mandatory Mid Summer Training and encouraged Team Building - July 20, 2024
Once a week staff meetings, from 4:30 - 5:30 PM
Daily Safety Briefing at 8:30 AM

Fun - You look for ways to incorporate excitement and joy into day-to-day experiences. Must be able to participate in the following activities: swimming, canoeing, sailing, arts and crafts, etc. Previous experience working at camps, considered an asset.
Intentional - Your actions are purposeful and value driven. You are a direct and clear communicator. Ability to respond appropriately in high stress situations. Previous experience working with youth, considered an asset
Caring - You welcome and celebrate people with empathy and dignity. You enjoy working with individuals to create supports that work the best for them. Ability to provide support to participants requiring lifts and transfers, and personal care support.
Easeful - You strive to create accessible and inclusive spaces that remove barriers to access. You enjoy finding ways to adapt and modify activities to create engaging programming. Previous experience developing and implementing programming, considered an asset.
Safe - You value creating and maintaining safe spaces to promote inclusion and fun!

Requirements:

Must be over the age of 18.
Must pass a Screening Process including a Backcheck
Must be able to provide proof of current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, prior to the start date.
Experience working with people with disabilities and/or youth would be considered an asset.
Experience in a supervisory role and/or summer camp work would be beneficial, but not a requirement
Ability to provide support to participants requiring lifts and transfers, and personal care support
